Serial Number / VIN

Serial Number / VIN are unique identifiers used to distinguish an individual asset from others, even those of the identical make and model. While a Serial Number is a general identifier for any asset, a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a specialized code specifically for motor vehicles that includes details such as the manufacturer, model year, and place of manufacture.

Key Details:

  • System Category: This field is located under Assets – General (Details).
  • Tracking Precision: These identifiers allow for granular tracking of an asset’s specific location, condition, maintenance history, and usage over time.
  • Inventory Management: They are essential for managing Serialized Rental Assets, ensuring that high-value items are tracked as individual units rather than bulk quantities

Use Case Example

A rental company owns ten identical generators from the same manufacturer. By recording the Serial Number (e.g., “GEN12345”) for each unit, the system can track that Generator A is currently at a construction site in Dallas, while Generator B—which looks the same – is in the warehouse for a scheduled engine service. For their fleet of delivery trailers, they use the VIN to ensure the correct vehicle is matched with its registration and insurance paperwork.
