SKU

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is a unique, alphanumeric code assigned to inventory items to identify, track, and manage stock levels systematically.

Key Details:

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) identifies a distinct product type, model, or configuration, making it the foundational element for tracking bulk inventory and managing sales or rental catalogs.

  • System Category: This field is managed within the Product and Price List Item configurations of the software.
  • Bulk vs. Serialized: SKUs are applied to all items in your inventory. For non-serialized assets (like safety cones or small attachments), the SKU is used to track the overall quantity. For high-value serialized assets (like excavators), a single SKU defines the model type, while individual serial numbers differentiate each physical machine under that SKU.
  • Pricing Integration: Every unique SKU is linked to specific pricing structures, enabling the system to automatically pull standard hourly, daily, or monthly rates when an item is added to an order.
  • Inventory Control: Monitoring stock levels via SKUs allows procurement managers to identify which types of equipment are highly utilized and which lines need replenishment.

Use Case Example

A rental company carries a specific model of a 50kW diesel generator. They assign it the SKU GEN-50KW-D. If they own 15 of these generators, all 15 share that exact same SKU for cataloging and pricing. Utilizing this unified tracking is a core element of an inventory management software that allow your sales team to see that while 10 units of SKU GEN-50KW-D are currently on rent, 5 remain available for immediate booking, ensuring smooth warehouse operations without manual counting.

Think of it as the DNA code for your inventory catalog—it tells the system exactly what the item is, while serial numbers tell the system which specific one it is.
